About Us

Passion for Our Mission

Before we founded Freedom & Whiskey Equine Rescue, we had a passion to help rescue horses and donkeys in need and a calling to educate the world about the brutal reality of horse slaughter.

Personally Funded Rescue

Since 2015, we've personally funded more than $30,000 per year to rescue, rehab, and rehome the horses and donkeys we've saved from slaughter and neglect.

We're Making a Difference

Over the past 8 years, we've given more than a dozen horses and donkeys a second chance at life. We're educating people about the plight of thousands of neglected and unwanted animals.

What Makes Us Different?

We’re successful at rescuing and rehabbing horses and donkeys because of our balance of emotion and pragmatism. Many rescues are driven primarily by emotions, which often leads to taking on more than they can handle, hoarding animals, and ultimately failing when their finances run out. Too many rescues end up needing to be rescued leaving their animals in another desperate situation.

We have created the HORSE strategy that guides our rescue efforts.

H – Head & Heart
We both bring our unique strengths and personalities to the rescue. Our complimentary balance of head and heart ensures that we have, what we feel is the perfect balance of compassion, empathy, and emotional appeal mixed with pragmatism, strategy, and objectivity. All of these qualities guide us to make informed decisions about the horses and donkeys that we rescue, rehabilitate, rehome, or in some cases, provide sanctuary to.

O – Observe & Assess
Observation and assessment are fundamental to our success as a rescue. We can’t save everything, so we have implemented some criteria that helps us identify which horses and donkeys we rescue. As a rescue, our primary goal is to rehome the animals that we take in. If we can’t rehome the animals we take in, eventually the resources we have will be full and we will be unable to continue rescuing horses and donkeys in need. Our criteria help us identify horses that are sound, young enough to be desired for adoption, and possess the temperament to be safe around people and other animals.

R – Rescue, Rehab, & Rehome
Our three primary functions as a horse and donkey rescue are to rescue, rehab, and rehome. First, we rescue unwanted and neglected horses and donkeys, often from slaughter auctions where they are sold by the pound and slaughtered for human consumption. Second, we rehabilitate them to ensure they are sound, healthy, and of a temperament able to find an adoptive family. Last, we pair our rescue horses with new owners that meet our strict criteria for adoption and rehoming.

S – Sanctuary
Sometimes, despite the strategy, assessment, and painstaking work we put into a rescue they do not find their forever home. In these cases, we provide a sanctuary where the horse or donkey can live out its natural life in a safe, supportive, and loving environment. Our sanctuary residents help the newer rescues we bring to the farm assimilate to their surroundings and to provide them with companionship. Providing sanctuary to an animal that would have been slaughtered for its meat is both a moral and ethical imperative for us.

E – Educate the Masses
Many people are unaware of the tragic and often brutal realities neglected and unwanted horses suffer. We use our platform and every opportunity we are provided to share stories, news, and the ugly truth about horse slaughter to educate our followers, our communities, and those passionate about rescuing animals. Education is the first step to ending the brutal export and slaughter of equine animals for human consumption.

The Impact We Make!

Every single horse and donkey below is an example of the impact that Freedom & Whiskey Equine Rescue can, does, and has made. Some of these animals would have been slaughtered for food in Mexico or Canada if we hadn’t stepped up to rescue them. All of these animals deserved better than a slaughter auction and have been afforded the chance to continue living out the rest of their natural lives here on our farm. Our impact is directly tied to YOU, so we ask everyone who is moved by what you see here, and everyone who has the resources, time, ability, and means to either donate to our cause or to come out and volunteer on the farm to help us feed, clean, and care for the animals here on the farm.
