Have you always wanted to own a horse? Have your kids been nagging you about buying them a pony? Take it from us, horses are expensive and they take a TON of work to maintain. So, if you live in the stupid suburbs or an HOA that won’t let you park a pony in your backyard, we have a solution for you! You can sponsor one of our rescues instead of buying one of your own. We do all the work and you get a bunch of the credit. This is a win-win way to be involved without actually ever having to scoop a single poop.
What it Costs to Keep a Horse
If you are curious about what it costs us to keep just one of these horses, here is a breakdown of some average costs that we encounter.
- Grain: $10/week
- Hay: $50/week during winter months
- Farrier: $50 every 8 weeks
- Vaccines: $125 twice per year
- Dental: $100 per year
- Supplements: $5/week
This equals about $75 per week in the winter and $25/week in the summer for basic care and feeding, or calculated annually, about $1,900. Rescues that need special food, medication, or suffer injuries increase this number dramatically.
